Story #21: The legacy you may never see.

Sometimes we wonder what happens after a woman walks out our doors. We pray for her, trust God with her future, and often never know the rest of the story.

Every once in a while, though, we're reminded just how far your support reaches.

One of our advocates recently went to a lab in the Villages for routine bloodwork. While chatting with the young phlebotomist, the conversation turned to her children.

She mentioned her son was turning 18. Our advocate laughed and said, "There’s no way you have an 18-year-old!"

She smiled and replied, "I was 18 when I had him. Actually, I also have a 20-year-old, a 13-year-old, and a 4-year-old."

Then she added, "Believe me, I wasn't planning on having kids at 16 and 18. It just happened."

Our advocate told her, "I hear that almost every day at work."

"Where do you work?" she asked.

"Women's Pregnancy Center in Ocala."

Thankfully, the blood draw was already finished, because the young woman slapped the table and said, "You're kidding, right?"

She went on to share that she had come to Women's Pregnancy Center during all four of her pregnancies.

She remembered being a scared, confused 16-year-old. She remembered how welcomed she felt the moment she walked through our doors. Most of all, she remembered that no one judged her. An advocate simply sat with her, listened, and helped her believe she could have her baby and still pursue her dreams.

She received the support and resources she needed, and when she became pregnant again as a young mom, she came back because she knew she would receive the same compassionate care.

Later, she married the father of her children, and together they welcomed two more children. "And of course," she laughed, "I came back to WPC."

Before the appointment ended, she shared that she's been thinking about going back to school to become an ultrasound technician because she wants to give back to the place that encouraged her when she needed it most. She even said she'd love to work at Women's Pregnancy Center one day. While now may not be the right time for her, she was excited to hear there are volunteer opportunities.

That's the kind of legacy you make possible.
