Story #7: Emilia’s Story

For 45 years, we have had the privilege of meeting women right where they are—listening to their fears, walking with them through uncertainty, and reminding them they are not alone. As we celebrate 45 Years: Honoring the Legacy, Reaching Beyond, we are sharing stories that reflect the lives touched through your faithful support.

This week, we invite you into Emilia’s story - a story of fear, courage, and the power of compassionate care.

Emilia lives on her own with her two children. When she found out she was pregnant, she told her boyfriend, Adrian, and he immediately blocked her through all forms of communication and completely left her life. With no support from him, she felt it would be extremely hard to support another baby financially. She also had one more year of schooling to achieve her degree, and she worried that having a baby would delay this. Because of these things, she came to our office with her mind set on abortion. Since Emilia primarily speaks Spanish, she met with one of our Spanish-speaking advocates that day. When her advocate asked about her reasoning for choosing abortion, she began to cry, and continued to cry throughout the entire appointment. She shared that her mother is her main support and often helps babysit her children. And though her mother is completely against abortion and told Emilia she believed it is wrong, Emilia believed it is her body and her choice and she feels that is the best choice for her.

Emilia was given an ultrasound that day in our office, which showed that she was past the legal eligibility for an abortion in the state of Florida, which is currently 6 weeks. Therefore, she planned to make an appointment out of state, and said she would plan to visit us for another ultrasound before she goes to that appointment. Again, Emilia continued to cry and shared that she worried that aborting her baby would make her extremely depressed. Her advocate let her know that we are here to support her and continued to help her talk through her situation.

When her advocate called her to follow up a few days later, she shared that she was still planning on traveling out of state to get an abortion, but had not scheduled the appointment. She was offered another ultrasound with us, but turned it down.

At this point, we continue to pray for our clients, but we also know that we may never hear the outcome or any update on their pregnancy decision. Thankfully, that was not the case with Emilia.

Over a month later, Emilia called our office and spoke with her advocate. Her advocate immediately noticed how much happier Emilia sounded. Emilia asked if she could schedule another ultrasound, and shared that she had decided to parent her baby! Praise God! Her advocate told her how proud she was of her for being so brave and that she knew Emilia would continue to be a great mom. When asked what made her change her mind, she said she was able to get the abortion pills online but because of her mom’s support and willingness to help, she decided not to take them and instead, to parent her baby. Emilia is looking forward to welcoming this baby into her life and is thrilled about taking our Spanish Parenting Classes online!

We are so grateful that our clients’ stories never end when they walk out of our doors. God continues to work in their hearts as he did in Emilia’s heart. We thank God for Emilia’s supportive mother who bravely chose to share truth with her. We are also so blessed to be able to offer Spanish services to so many clients in our community. God continues to bless this ministry and change heart and lives. Thank you for your support in helping us meet these clients right where they are!
