Story #4: When a Door Opens
Every day, the door to WPC opens for women facing some of the most uncertain moments of their lives.
Some walk through it for the first time, afraid, overwhelmed, unsure of what comes next. Others return years later, forever changed by what happened inside.
But no matter when they come, one thing remains the same: when our doors are open, hope is never out of reach.
Walking Through the Door Together
Ellen walked through our doors with her teenage daughter, Ava, without an appointment. They had just discovered Ava was pregnant.
As they spoke with our client care coordinator at the front desk, Ellen shared honestly, “We just found out she was pregnant. She wants an abortion, but I don’t want her to.” Even on a full day, we were able to open the door for them, making space in our schedule.
What followed was an emotional conversation as we walked with Ava through her options, ensuring she felt supported, informed, and cared for.
Ellen was deeply grateful for the compassion shown to her daughter, especially the concern for her health and safety. But before she left, she shared something that reminded us just how powerful an open door can be. Twenty-four years ago, Ellen had walked through these same doors during her own pregnancy.
“One thing is for sure,” she said, “the building may have changed, but the feeling of love and care you get when you come through the door has not.”
A Door She Never Forgot
On another day, our front door opened, and a woman in scrubs quietly stepped inside. She approached the desk, her voice trembling as she spoke.
“I am going to try to say what I need to say without getting emotional. Eighteen years ago, I walked through your doors and took a pregnancy test. I was scared and alone, and you all helped me decide to keep my son. You saved my life, and you brought me to the Lord. I don’t think I would have survived without coming here, and I don’t know where I would be without my son. You truly did save my life—and you saved my son’s life.”
She had come back through those same doors for one reason: to say thank you. And then, just as quietly as she entered, she was gone, without even sharing her name. But her story remains a powerful reminder of what can happen when a woman walks through our doors.
These stories may be years apart, but they are connected by a single moment: the moment someone walked through an open door and found hope waiting on the other side.
A mother returns decades later with her daughter.
A woman comes back 18 years later, forever changed.
This is what happens when the door stays open.
